Before you start

Set up your game (about 10 minutes)

  1. 1

    Install Forge 1.20.1

Forge is the mod loader. It installs next to normal Minecraft and does not change your vanilla game.

    1. Open the Minecraft Launcher. Under Installations, make sure release 1.20.1 exists (create a new installation and pick version release 1.20.1 if it does not), then play it once so the launcher downloads 1.20.1. Quit the game.
    2. Download the Forge installer (the exact build the server runs, straight from Forge's own file server, no ad page):
      forge-1.20.1-47.4.28-installer.jar (about 9 MB)
If your browser warns that .jar files can be harmful, choose Keep. This one comes from maven.minecraftforge.net, Forge's official download host.
    3. Double-click the downloaded forge-1.20.1-47.4.28-installer.jar, keep Install client selected, and click OK. It finishes in under a minute.
The direct link did not work

Use the official Forge download page instead: files.minecraftforge.net, 1.20.1. Under Recommended, click Installer. An ad page opens; wait a few seconds and click Skip in the top right. Any 47.x build works with the server.

The .jar file will not open

Your PC needs Java to run the installer. Install the free Eclipse Temurin 17 JDK (pick your operating system, download the .msi on Windows), then double-click the installer again. If it still opens in another program, right-click it, choose Open with, and pick Java(TM) Platform SE binary or OpenJDK Platform binary.

  2. 2

Put the mods in your mods folder

    1. Download the client pack and open the ZIP. Inside is a mods folder with 11 .jar files.
    2. Open your Minecraft mods folder:
      • Windows: press Win+R, type %appdata%\.minecraft\mods, press Enter.
      • Mac: in Finder press Cmd+Shift+G, type ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods, press Enter.
      • Linux: ~/.minecraft/mods
If there is no mods folder yet, create one with that exact name.
    3. Copy all 11 .jar files from the ZIP into it. Copy the files themselves, not the mods folder.
    4. If you already had other mods in there, move them out. Extra or different mods will stop you from connecting.
  3. 3

    Launch with the Forge profile

    1. Open the Minecraft Launcher. Next to the Play button, open the dropdown and pick forge (it shows 1.20.1 underneath).
    2. Press Play. The first start takes a minute or two while Forge sets itself up. A warning about mods or third-party software is normal; click Play again.
    3. When you reach the title screen, the bottom left should say Forge 47.x and 11 mods loaded.
  4. 4

    Add the server and join

    1. Click Multiplayer, then Add Server.
    2. Server Name: anything, for example Nomi's Horror Server.
    3. Server Address: jensen-assign.tun.ply.gg (no port needed, no spaces). Click Done.
    4. The server shows up in the list with a green signal bar when it is online. Double-click it to join.

If your game insists on a port, use jensen-assign.tun.ply.gg:4535 instead.

Something went wrong

You seeWhat it means
"This server has mods that require Forge to be installed on the client"You launched normal Minecraft. In the launcher, pick the forge profile next to Play (step 3).
"You are not white-listed on this server!"Everything works. Nomi just has to add your username. Send it exactly as it appears in the launcher's top left.
"Incompatible FML modded server", "Mod rejections", or a list of missing or mismatched modsYour mods folder does not match the pack. Delete everything in mods, download the pack again, and copy in all 11 files. Remove any mod that did not come from the pack.
"Connection timed out" or "Can't connect to server", red signal barThe server or its tunnel is off. Check the status at the top of this page. If you typed the address, check it for typos and spaces.
"Failed to verify username" or "Invalid session"Close the game and launcher completely, open the launcher again, and press Play. If it keeps happening, log out of the launcher and back in.
The game crashes while startingUsually OptiFine, shaders, or an old mod left in the folder. Clear the mods folder and copy the pack in again. If it still crashes, set the RAM back to -Xmx2G or update your graphics drivers.
Only "Latest release" and "Latest snapshot" in the Play dropdownForge did not finish installing, or the launcher was open during the install. Close the launcher, run the Forge installer again, then reopen the launcher.

Still stuck? Send Nomi a screenshot of the error and your Minecraft username.
